The Ultimate Guide to Golden Hour Weddings in Puerto Vallarta

What is the Golden Hour, and Why Does it Matter in Puerto Vallarta?

Golden Hour — that fleeting period shortly after sunrise or before sunset — bathes everything in a soft, warm, golden light. On a practical level, it means flattering skin tones, minimal harsh shadows, and a natural radiance that no studio lighting can replicate.

For wedding photography, it’s the difference between portraits that look beautiful and portraits that look extraordinary.

Puerto Vallarta’s geography makes it particularly special for golden hour photography. The Sierra Madre mountains frame the coast to the east, creating a natural amphitheater that channels and focuses sunset light in ways that flat coastal settings simply cannot. As the sun drops toward the Pacific horizon, those mountains catch and hold the warm tones while the bay reflects the sky in real time.

The result is a light quality that photographers from around the world travel to experience.

The Crucial Timing: When Does Golden Hour Happen in Puerto Vallarta?

Understanding when to schedule your ceremony is the single most actionable thing you can do to improve your wedding photos before the day even arrives.

The general rule: ceremonies should begin approximately 90 minutes before sunset to allow the ceremony to finish and transition to couple’s portraits precisely as golden hour peaks.

Which Months Are Best?

Every month in Puerto Vallarta can produce beautiful golden hour photography, but different months offer different qualities:

November and December: Clear skies, crisp air, and some of the most vibrant sunset colors of the year. These months also align with peak wedding season, which means your resort and vendors are operating at their best.

May and June: Dramatic cloud formations begin to build before rainy season starts. A cloudy golden hour in Puerto Vallarta doesn’t mean rain — it often means extraordinary light filtered through spectacular cloud structure. Some of the most dramatic wedding portraits we’ve ever taken were in late May.

December through February: The sun sets earlier, which actually works in your favor for couples who prefer a late afternoon ceremony rather than an evening one.

The Bride & Groom Session: Making Every Minute Count

The dedicated couple’s portrait session — typically 25–35 minutes during peak golden hour — is one of the most choreographed parts of a well-planned wedding day. Here’s how we approach it:

Step 1: Ceremony ends. Guests move to cocktail hour. Second photographer continues candid coverage of guests.

Step 2: We take the couple on a pre-planned route through 2–3 portrait locations on the property or nearby — specifically chosen based on where the light will fall during that exact window.

Step 3: 25–30 minutes of portraits at peak golden hour. This is efficient but not rushed. We know exactly where to stand, which direction to face, and how to position the couple to maximize the available light.

Step 4: Return to reception. Guests never noticed you were gone, but your gallery now contains some of the most beautiful photographs from the entire day.

Why Hire a Local Expert for Golden Hour

Fifteen-plus years photographing weddings in Puerto Vallarta means I’ve watched the light move across every major venue in the city in every month of the year. I know that the Eugenia Terrace at Grand Miramar gets beautiful warm light from the northwest in October but from a slightly different angle in March. I know that Conchas Chinas beach gets mountain shadow earlier than the resorts on the hotel strip.

This knowledge isn’t something you can get from a Google search. It comes from being here, consistently, for years.
